Termites
Subterranean termites swarm in spring and eat wood from the inside. By the time you see damage, they’ve usually been there a while.
Main risk
Property damage
Signs to look for
Swarms of winged insects near windows in spring, or piles of discarded wings.
Pencil-width mud tubes on foundations, piers or walls.
Wood that sounds hollow or crumbles when pressed.
Why it matters
Termites cause more property damage in the US than storms and fire combined, and most home insurance doesn’t cover it. They work out of sight, so regular inspections matter more than for any other pest.
How to keep them out
Keep mulch, firewood and soil away from wooden siding.
Fix leaks and keep gutters clear so the foundation stays dry.
Book a yearly inspection, especially for older homes.
How we treat them
A full inspection, then a liquid barrier in the soil around the house or bait stations that eliminate the colony. Both come with a yearly re-inspection.
